Steria Secures Two New Contracts in India with Allahabad and Ghaziabad Police Departments

Steria-LogoNew Delhi, India, June 15, 2014: Steria, a leading provider of IT-enabled business services, has announced the signing of two major contracts with India’s Uttar Pradesh (UP) Police, which has selected Steria to help improve the efficiency of its Emergency Response and Security Surveillance System, in the cities of Allahabad and Ghaziabad. Steria will provide a variety of support, integration and IT services that will enable the police to make faster and smarter decisions on how it uses resources to respond to emergencies.

Building from Steria’s vast experience on homeland security projects, the contract with the cities of Allahabad and Ghaziabad will enable the two cities’ police departments to improve the speed and efficiency of their Emergency Response (Command and Control) and Surveillance Systems. These systems are responsible for monitoring sensitive locations in the city and for addressing distress calls from 6 million citizens of Allahabad – which also hosts the famous Kumbh Mela every 6 years, where over 50 million people visit and take the holy dip in the Ganges River during 55 days – and from 2.5 million citizens in the city of Ghaziabad which, due to its close proximity to the capital city of Delhi, needs to lessen the high crime rate currently prevalent in the city.

Under the new contracts, Steria will provide integrated Computer Aided Dispatch platforms that will handle inbound ‘Dial-100’ citizen distress calls.  The GIS-based (Geographical Information System) platform will capture caller information and location coordinates, and dispatch them to the nearest police patrol vehicle for emergency handling. This new functionality will improve efficiency, reducing the time it takes to respond to calls and provide a better view of emergency situations for more efficient resource mobilisation and allocation.

Steria will also implement CCTV Surveillance with advanced Video Analytics at 43 sensitive locations across the city of Allahabad. These locations will be monitored round the clock from a modernized control room with the help of an OFC communications backbone.

For both contracts, the projects include a systems integration phase, followed by two years of application support. Steria will work on the installation of the application software, the setup of data centre infrastructure, the system’s control room, network and connectivity.

Steria partnered for the bid with TCIL (Telecommunications Consultants India Ltd), a public sector telecommunications consultancy and engineering company that operates under the Ministry of Communications and IT. Steria was selected over 13 other shortlisted companies, including some of India’s key players in the homeland security domain. This contract win reinforces Steria’s expertise as a highly regarded provider of IT solutions to India’s homeland security and transportation sectors.

John Torrie, Senior Executive Vice-President, CEO Steria UK and Asia, said, “The solution will provide the police forces with a comprehensive real-time view of events across the cities of Allahabad and Ghaziabad.  With this crucial insight, emergency response teams will be able to better assess needs, prioritise and coordinate actions and proactively deploy assets to address, and potentially prevent, multiple, complex incidents within the two cities. These wins not only strengthen our position in Homeland Security in India but also help create a new volume benchmark, which can be leveraged for similar opportunities in other Steria markets.”

Steria’s CEO in India Sanjeev Varma said, ”The benefits of this solution are vast. The system’s unified view of incident data enables faster and smarter decision making with the ability to handle multiple situations simultaneously and reduce emergency response time substantially. It will also enable end-to-end coordination of emergency agencies and connect diverse first responder agencies with shared, inter-operable equipment and protocols.”

Steria supports the transformation needed for police and emergency services to cost effectively operate their business and IT functions and step up their visibility in the community. We have pioneered new models in operational and back-office support, as well as in criminal justice. Furthermore, our contact management, Command and Control, mobility and control room support services are enhancing citizen confidence.
